Hello I'm Here - Huichol Beading Attempt

Hi - My new blog about beading and the business of The Ornamental Lady. I'm going to jump right in.

I have a group of beaders that meet twice a month at the local Perkins. We've been doing this for almost a year now. This year we decided to do some bead a longs. Projects we can all do together - maybe learn something new together - and rely on each other's strengths to get over the rough spots.

For our first bead a long we decided to look at the gorgeous beadwork of the Huichol people of Mexico. Now I have to be honest the beadweaving is gorgeous that they do and I am excited to be learning the techniques but the most beautiful Huichol beadwork to me is not weaving - it is the creating of vibrant patterns by placing beads, hole side up, on wax covered objects.

The bowl pictured above is from a site that talks about the artwork of Kupíha'ute-Itzpapalotl. Click on the picture to find out more about his beautiful artwork.

This is not the work we are doing - instead we are going to be doing some jewelry pieces in flat and circular netting. I did not do mine in the traditional colors that the Huichol people use. They tend to stick to primary colors that are nice and bright.

This bracelet is one of the pieces we will be working on. I did this piece based on a free online tutorial by Kat Adair.

And these earrings are the other piece. These are the circular netting.

I used Japanese seed beads for both of these. Traditionally these are made with Czech beads. There is some difference in the look of these pieces with the different beads as can be seen in this picture.

You can also see the difference in color that I was talking abut. I'm hoping to do my next pieces in the bright Czech beads like they use. In future posts I will be delving more into the symbolism in the shapes used and the colors used and a little more into the culture of these people and their art.

Toodaloo for now.
